Responsible Purchasing

Purchasing

With our diverse product portfolio and growing consumer demand, we’re on the fast track to increase standards for packaging and distribution solutions. As product, consumer and sustainability expectations shift, we’re working with our suppliers to implement practices that reduce our collective footprints.

Packaging

Our consumers are seeking more sustainable alternatives to the packaging materials pioneered by earlier generations. We embrace this shift and are working with suppliers to ensure responsible and efficient use of packaging materials.

A recent packaging redesign achieved between 8-18% reduction in materials use across 16 million Luzianne Tea retail cartons annually.

Our 2025 goal: Increase use of post-consumer recycled content, ensuring responsible sourcing of raw materials and improving recyclability (2018 baseline)

Our Progress

  • All food-service cups are now made with post-consumer recycled content
  • Reduced packaging materials in Luzianne Tea retail cartons
  • 100% of virgin corrugate material is now Sustainable Forestry Initiative certified

Helping Consumers Be More Sustainable

Our New England Coffee brand is sold in “to-go cups” throughout the Northeast region of the U.S., and we recognized the need to eliminate the use of Styrofoam, which is fossil-fuel derived and not recyclable.

SOLUTION

We worked with consumers and suppliers to identify a fiber-based alternative that’s recyclable, contains a minimum of 40% post-consumer recycled content, and is Sustainable Forestry Initiative certified.

Distribution

We support U.S. EPA SmartWay, a voluntary initiative that reduces the environmental footprint of transportation through adoption of climate-smart fleet logistics and technologies. The majority of our carriers are SmartWay certified, and in support of our 2025 goals we aim to increase that number by prioritizing SmartWay carriers. We’re exploring opportunities to reduce fuel use for company vehicles, too, including routing and scheduling changes and more fuel-efficient vehicles.
